Where MetaCat wins
Batteries. This is the whole argument. The Joy for All cat runs on four C cells that die without warning — a problem caregivers describe as the pet "dying" at night. MetaCat charges over USB-C (port in a belly pocket) in about 45 minutes and claims up to ten hours of use. If there is someone in the house to plug it in, that is a real quality-of-life improvement and a saving on batteries.
Voice commands. Twenty-plus commands ("look up," "shake your tail," "go to sleep") with a custom wake word, so the cat answers to whatever name your mother gives it. Joy for All responds to sound direction but not to commands.
Price. $159 on sale ($189 list) versus $159.99, so a wash — but MetaCat is not out of stock as often.
Where Joy for All wins
Evidence and track record. The Cornwall cluster trial, the UCHealth hospital pilot, the state programs, the AARP and Alzheimer's Society coverage — all Joy for All. MetaCat has no studies and no program deployments we could find. That does not mean it works less well; it means nobody has checked.
The eyes. Joy for All uses mechanical eyelids that open and close. MetaCat uses small animated screens. One caregiver on the Alzheimer's Association forum called MetaCat's eyes "kind of creepy"; others like the blinks and winks. If the person you are buying for is easily unsettled, mechanical eyes are the safer choice.
Returns. Joy for All sells through Amazon, which means a return window that works. Elephant Robotics accepts returns only for unopened items, buyer pays shipping, and the box takes one to three weeks to arrive. If the pet is rejected — which happens — that matters.
Weight. Both are around four pounds by the published figures, but MetaCat's weight and dimensions are not actually listed on its product page; we could not verify them.
Our call
- Facility, memory-care unit, or a person living alone: Joy for All. Nobody is there to charge a pet, and the evidence is on its side.
- Living with family who will charge it, and the C-battery problem worries you: MetaCat. Keep the box for two weeks in case it is rejected.
- Either way: read the dementia guide for the feeding problem, muting, and washing, which apply to both.
